About Shivaji Jayanti 2019

Shivaji Jayanti also known as Shiv Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of Maratha Empire and one of the the greatest ruler of Maharashtra.

Shivaji was born to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai in the hill-fort of Shivneri on 19 February 1630 and hence his birth anniversary is celebrated every year on February 19.

However, Shivaji Jayanti is also celebrated according to the Hindu calendar during March – April period ever year.

According to Hindu Calendar i.e., according to tithi, Shivaji was born on third day of dark phase of Hindu calendar month Phalgun (Phalgun Krishna Paksha Tritiya).

In Maharashta, Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated on a grand scale.

Shivaji Jayanti is a restricted holidays in India and a statewide holiday in Maharashta where schools, colleges, banks and government offices remain closed.

  • In 2019, Shivaji Jayant will be celebrated on Tuesday, 19 February 2019.
  • In 2019, Tithi Anusar Shivaji Jayant will be celebrated on Saturday, 23 March 2019. It will mark 389th Birth Anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

On this Day, in Mumbai, the Governor of Maharashtra pays floral tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Shivaji Park.

Apart from this Shivaji Jayanti celebrations programme is organised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wherein patriotic songs are presented and life of Shivaji Maharaj is schowcased.

In many parts of Maharashtra, colourful procession are taken out by people to mark Shivaji Jayanti.

Apart from this, floral tributes are also paid to all other statues of Shivaji Maharaj in all corners of Maharashtra.

Apart from Mumbai, major celebrations of Shivaji Jayanti take place in other bigger cities and towns of Maharashtra like – Thane, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Wardha, Yavatmal, Beed, Sangli, Solapur, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Osmanabad, Chandrapur, Buldhana, Jalna, Latur, Hingoli, Washim, Nandurbar, Ratnagiri, etc.
